Although some people say it’s hard to make an original photograph these days, the task becomes easier if the subject is a person. Even though the Balkan Shmalkan and his  hat and his horn must have been photographed many times before, each moment is different. For the photographer, the passing of time is a gift, not a curse.

I started making photographs to illustrate travel stories I wrote for magazines, back in the days of film--especially Velvia slide film, with its breathtaking reds and oranges. My passion for black and white comes from the fact that taking away color from an image can reveal things we might not notice otherwise. That’s the case with the picture of the lilly: those sensuous curves are less striking in color. Black and white is good for contrasting textures, too, as in Animal, Vegetable, Mineral. And Two Vilanova Houses shows how reducing everything to simple tones of light and dark can heighten geometrical similarities and differences.
