I started making photographs to illustrate travel stories I wrote for magazines, back in the days of film--especially Velvia slide film, with its breathtaking reds and oranges. My passion for black and white comes from the fact that taking away color from an image can reveal things we might not notice otherwise. That’s the case with the picture of the lilly: those sensuous curves are less striking in color. Black and white is good for contrasting textures, too, as in Animal, Vegetable, Mineral. And Two Vilanova Houses shows how reducing everything to simple tones of light and dark can heighten geometrical similarities and differences.
