一写入魂

Tina

This is Nina, who is eight weeks old. Nothing entertains me more than to watch kittens at play. As Nina wrestles with her brother Miles I feel like a Roman emperor watching two gladiators fight. And although the kittens find it enormous fun, there is a serious purpose behind all their hyperactivity. Pouncing and wrestling are skills they would need in the wild to capture prey and perhaps even to survive.

I started making photographs to illustrate travel stories I wrote for magazines, back in the days of film--especially Velvia slide film, with its breathtaking reds and oranges. My passion for black and white comes from the fact that taking away color from an image can reveal things we might not notice otherwise. That’s the case with the picture of the lilly: those sensuous curves are less striking in color. Black and white is good for contrasting textures, too, as in Animal, Vegetable, Mineral. And Two Vilanova Houses shows how reducing everything to simple tones of light and dark can heighten geometrical similarities and differences.
